Community Reserve Zancudococha

Selva Libre is working in conjunction with the Kichwa community of Zancudococha to preserve 111,200 acres of primary jungle in their territory. Their territory is home to healthy populations of iconic megafauna like puma, jaguar, jaguarundy, ocelot, tapir, pink river dolphins, primates, and rare tree and plant species. Selva Libre is offering the community an annual payment per hectare in exchange for the conservation of their forests. The annual money allocated to the community enables them to invest in important community programs like their school and community clinic. Selva Libre is also creating short and long term job opportunities for community members to help manage the reserve and programs to improve the quality of life for the Kichwa in Zancudococha. By creating green sector job opportunities, we are reducing the exploitation of precious resources from the jungle including wild meat and rare hardwoods that community members would otherwise sell commercially to pay for their living expenses. Simultaneously, the preservation of their territory will help protect the populations of wild plants and animals that community members depend on for their livelihoods. Selva Libre integrates traditional knowledge and community feedback into our conservation strategy for this project. By doing so, we honor the historical contributions of Indigenous communities to the conservation of the Amazonia, and create an equitable future in ecosystem management.
